FACING THE PAST TO EMBRACE THE FUTURE

“...the parent-child relationship, the ways children protect themselves, and the flawed adult these experiences form allows the reader to see into their own life-mirror while simultaneously grieving and celebrating the author’s story. This is soul touching, hopeful work.” —Yasmin Dean, PhD, RSW

“It’s a nice piece of work, well-written. Concise and punchy, I would absolutely recommend!”Daniel Okoro, 1st Consulting Psychiatrist at Alberta Health Services, Clinical Assistant Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry, University of Calgary

If you’ve ever wondered how emotional wounds are formed, healing into mere scars, this book is for you. Greatness Finds a Way is the author’s personal journey, written in a manner that draws you in as you learn more about yourself.

A seasoned therapist, Elena Sherwood walks the definitively brave line of using her story to inspire and she does so tastefully and with grace.

A purposeful short read that leaves a lasting impression, Greatness Finds a Way is a powerful story of hope and a reminder that you are not alone.

As Elena’s doctoral supervisor, I knew her as an engaging, positive, hard-working woman. She shared little about her childhood or family, keeping a firm focus on her dissertation about happy marriages in the Canadian military. Reading her story and learning about her poignant childhood helps me understand her person and her ambition. It provides the genesis of Elena’s promise that the greatness of every one of us will find a way.
— Leslie M. Tutty, PhD Professor Emerita Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary

Elena Sherwood received her BSW from Ryerson in Toronto, an MSW from University of Manitoba, and a PhD from the University of Calgary. She has done much to further the study of Canadian military couples and is a peer-reviewed sole author in the Clinical Social Work Journal. With basic and advanced training in CBT, EMDR and EFCT she has over 30 years of clinical expertise. She maintains a small practice; however, to make room for her obsession with the word real she ran two empowering Facebook groups called “To Be Real!”, and grads are now fully invested in her ongoing group called “Keeping It Real”. You’ll find her hanging out in her favourite place, “Being Real with That Therapist Chick”, her podcast Dr Elena – That Therapist Chick, or blogging at dr-elena.com.

Mostly though, she’s donned in denim coveralls playing with colour in all mediums; Cricut, 5D diamond painting, and upcycling are the top contenders, all approached with a mid-century-modern-boho flair. She lives in Greely, Ontario with her husband, her intermittently present sons, and her rescues (a kind-hearted shepherd/doberman and mean boss tabby).
