 The Story:

I have fantasized about a store front for as long as I can remember. On a large scale, I want a place that is not only a bookstore for CHP titles, but also a hub of connection: a local zone for creatives to gather for workshops, community, readings, and launches. Unfortunately, the universe doesn’t deliver something just because you want it. The overhead to launch a storefront is far beyond my current capabilities.

In the midst of the global pandemic, my father (from whom I get my big idea brain) opened a store in a neighbouring town. I was excited for him. And instantly jealous.

In the back of his store there stood a little room. He had some ideas for it, but being a sole proprietor without employees, he didn’t have the time to add anything new to his space.

When I proposed taking over the space to create a little shop for Chicken House Press, it didn’t take him long to say yes.

Work began to turn the little space into a special little shop for people to visit.

My motivation and goal was two-fold:

  1. To provide a shopping space for people who love bookstores, who want to browse and touch and chat and save on shipping costs.

  2. To add a little more structure (and human connection) to my week. Working for myself has been amazing, but it often feels like every day is the same. Having to ‘go to work’ once in a while will keep me on my toes, let me interact with three-dimensional people, and give me a really fun way to promote new titles while still getting to appreciate working for myself.

I am counting on your support to make this little idea viable. I am committing to be there every Friday and some Saturdays with a willingness to adjust should customer behaviour demand it. Hope to see you there! 💛
