“I mostly liked everything from this creative writing workshop…”

— Jesse, 12

I learned lots of things that I was learning at school so it helped me. I also loved that we did things before we were writing like how to write a story.
— Lila, 11

Gathering in person to jump-start a love of story telling.

With four 60 minute sessions and a little independent effort, your child will end the program with a complete short story and a new understanding of their own unique writing voice.

 Who should sign up?

This workshop is designed for children between the ages of 9 and 12 and should be reserved for those who are independent learners with eager imaginations. Children must be able to write sentences and paragraphs without assistance. This is an interactive workshop and children will be invited to share their thoughts and answers, but only if they are comfortable doing so. This workshop is only open to 10 children/session, so sign up now to reserve your spot!

What happens at each session?

Your child will be sharing space with up to nine other story tellers. We will learn about what makes a good story, the stages of writing, brainstorming, finding your voice, drafting, and more! A hot chocolate station will provide a little break in the middle of each session and some fuel for their quiet writing time. Each child will be provided with a workbook and pen. If other writing tool are required, these will be provided.

Parents are invited to stay and quietly peruse the library.

Teaching your children through kind conversation and gentle encouragement.

My child does better in a 1 on 1 situation. Can you accommodate that?

It’s not unusual for imaginative and creative types to be introverted and want to avoid group situations and projects. That is why I offer a writing mentorship program available to all ages. Available on a weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly basis, I will meet one on one with your child virtually to encourage, teach, motivate, and challenge them based on their individual needs.

Location: 453 Garafraxa St S, Durham, ON N0G 1R0

Cost: $10* (to be paid to the library)

*in 2023 I collected donations of used books and hosted a sale over several weeks in order to raise funds to support this workshop. Enough was raised through this project to allow me to offer my teaching services for free in 2024. The only cost to participants is to cover the expense of the workbook.
