BENNINGTON — J. T. Maxwell started writing his debut novel, "Red Brick Road," when his son was born in 2007. When he would get up to feed the baby at 2:30 a.m., he couldn’t get back to sleep.

“So, I'd be up and I just started clacking away,” he said. "And I realized early on that my characters needed a solid setting, they needed something to ground them.”

Maxwell first became familiar with Bennington as manager of an Enterprise Rental branch in Brattleboro.

“I would very often have to come over here to Bennington for meetings, or I'd have to bring a car over, so I got familiar with Bennington. And I thought, that might do it. That might work,” he said.
