Ontario Author Brings New Twist to Classic Horror Trope

June 10, 2024 | For Immediate Release

Benjamin Rempel of Collingwood, Ontario, is set to release his debut novel, INFECT, a gritty and sophisticated 90s-era thriller.

When one of Benjamin Rempel’s stories was entered in the 2022 summer anthology contest hosted by Blank Spaces and Chicken House Press, he immediately caught the eye of CHP owner and contest-runner, Alanna Rusnak.

Appreciating his bold and dark tone, Rempel was invited to submit a full manuscript. His work was subsequently accepted, beginning the creative journey of developing it into a chilling adult thriller, resulting in INFECT — book one in the Feral Winter Series.

An accomplished essayist and nominated for several literary awards, Rempel’s work has appeared in The Toronto Star, Blank Spaces, and Fifteen Stories High Anthology, among others. With vivid storytelling and world building, and influenced by such writers as Clifford Jackman and Gil Adamson, INFECT opens with a firm foundation of setting, character, and motivation, trusting the intelligence of the reader while not protecting them from the reality of a dark new universe.

“Reminiscent of M. Night Shyamalan with plenty of twists and tension,” says J. T. Maxwell, author of Red Brick Road. “Unravelling this can of worms was way more fun than I was ready for.”

Collingwood Poet Laureate Jillian Morris calls it, “a wild, fast-paced thriller... A little gore and a lot of fun,” while writer and playwright, Janet Wilkinson says “it grabs the reader from the first page and never lets go.”

Officially launching on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. at Press Market (2 Mountain Road, Unit 3, Collingwood), an event sponsored by The Collingwood Brewery and Ginger Bug, guests are invited to join in for a reading, book signing, and panel discussion with Rempel and his publisher. Tickets for the event are available from benjaminrempel.com.

INFECT is a violent, mysterious, and powerfully empathetic debut that will have readers clawing for more. It is a fresh and unexpected execution of the classic zombie trope.

The book is available in paperback from the publisher, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and anywhere else good books are sold. Ebooks can be obtained through Amazon, Kobo, Apple Books, and Nook.

Store owners and distributors are invited to register with Chicken House Press as a retailer of titles or to seek out the title on INGRAM to enjoy a wholesale discount on copies of the book.

FERAL WINTER BOOK ONE

Nearing the end of a harsh winter, estranged half-brothers, Andrew and Xavier, flee into the dark woods isolating their town. Panicked, the young men seek refuge from a growing horde of feral townsfolk tracking them with unbridled violence.

Threatened by dwindling food supplies, rising tensions, and a troubled group of survivors, the brothers are thrust into bloody conflicts while desperately searching for their parents.

As their community unravels, Andrew and Xavier must uncover the terrifying truth about a virus ravaging their town if they are to survive one more night from the things that hunt them.

Hailed as “violent, mysterious, and powerfully empathetic,” INFECT explores human behaviour where nothing is sacred and survival is the highest priority.
