Chicken House Press Signs Ontario Writer for a Feral Action Thriller

Rempel signing his publishing contract.

Chicken House Press has secured Benjamin Rempel, from Collingwood, ON. for his chilling debut novel, INFECT, a fresh and unexpected execution of the classic zombie trope.

Violent, mysterious, and powerfully empathetic, Rempel explores human behaviour in a high-stress environment where nothing is sacred and survival is the highest priority.

A passionate writer and essayist, Benjamin’s work has been nominated for several honours including the Rising Spirits Writing Award and the John Kenneth Galbraith Literary Award. In 2021, his fiction won honorable mention from the Canadian Authors Association.

INFECT is the first in a planned trilogy, a gritty and sophisticated series that follows the Stone brothers into a nightmarish reality.

Nearing the end of a harsh winter, two half-brothers flee into the dark woods surrounding their isolated town. Andrew, studied and calculated; Xavier, hardened and half-mad. Shaken, the men seek refuge from a growing horde of feral townsfolk savagely tracking them with unbridled violence.

Burdened by their strained relationship, the brothers are thrust into bloody conflicts while desperately searching for their parents. Cut off from power, they attempt to lead a panicked group of survivors threatened by dwindling food supplies and rising tensions. But as their community begins to crumble, Andrew and Xavier must uncover the terrifying truth about a virus ravaging their town if they are to survive one more night from the things that hunt them.

Reminiscent of Stephen King’s vivid storytelling and world building, and influenced by such writers as Clifford Jackman and Gil Adamson, INFECT opens with a firm foundation of setting, character, and motivation, trusting the intelligence of the reader while not protecting them from the reality of a dark new universe.

INFECT is a riveting debut that will have readers clawing for more.

Watch for it in 2024.
